Ever feel like you’re walking a tightrope, balancing your incredible business dreams with the beautiful chaos of family life, only to have someone yank the rope with a big, fat “NO”? Honestly, I get it. Juggling my four kids, my PhD research, and running Femmeprenista (while dodging rogue incidents like the time my toddler decided to finger-paint the living room wall with my brand-new lipstick – more on that kind of beautiful chaos later!) has taught me a thing or two about rejection. But what if I told you that “no” isn’t necessarily a full stop; it’s sometimes a comma – a pause, a breath, a chance to pivot & refine your approach?

Reframing Rejection: It’s Data, Not Defeat

Let’s be real, rejection stings. Whether it’s a potential client choosing another coach, a funding application being denied, or a collaboration falling through, that initial “ouch” is very real. But here’s the game-changer: Rejection isn’t failure; it’s data. It’s valuable information telling you what’s not working & , crucially, giving you clues about what might.

Think of it like this: my teenage daughter recently decided she absolutely had to have this particular pair of trainers. “Everyone has them, Mum!” she declared. I, being the pragmatic Gemini that I am, gently suggested we explore some equally stylish, slightly more budget-friendly options. Cue the eye-roll & dramatic sigh. Rejection, right? But instead of digging in my heels (because who has time for a trainer stand-off with a teenager when you’re trying to launch a new program and the baby’s decided nap time is over?), I asked her, “Okay, tell me why these specific trainers are so important to you.” Turns out, it wasn’t just about the brand; it was about fitting in with her friends, expressing her style, & feeling confident. That “no” to the initial request opened up a conversation, revealed the underlying need, & allowed us to find a solution that worked for both of us. Just like in business, sometimes the initial “no” from a client masks a deeper need. Maybe they’re not rejecting your offer outright, but rather the way it’s presented, the timing, or perhaps even their own internal blocks around investing in themselves.

See? Data. Not defeat.

From Ouch to Opportunity: A 3-Step Framework for Handling Rejection

So, how do you turn that initial sting into a strategic springboard? Here’s a simple, actionable framework:

  1. Analyze: Don’t just brush off the rejection. Take a deep breath (maybe with a cuppa – it’s my go-to when the kids are finally quiet and the puppy’s stopped using the sofa as a trampoline!) & analyze the situation. Ask yourself:
    • What specifically led to the “no”? Was it my pricing, my messaging, my timing, the fit with the client or opportunity?
    • Was there any feedback provided? (Even a simple “not right now” can be insightful. What might “not right now” actually mean? Perhaps it’s a budget issue, or maybe they need more information to feel confident in their decision.)
    • What can I learn from this experience? What can I do differently next time?
  2. Extract the Lesson: Often, rejection highlights blind spots. It might reveal that your messaging isn’t resonating with your ideal client, your pricing doesn’t align with the value you offer, or you need to refine your systems for a smoother client experience. Remember, this isn’t about self-criticism; it’s about self-correction & growth. This is especially true for us as women – we tend to internalize “no” and make it about our worth. But what if it’s simply about refining our approach?
    • Are you clearly communicating the transformation you offer? Are you focusing on the feeling she’ll experience as a result of working with you, not just the features of your program?
    • Does your pricing reflect the value you provide? Does it honor your expertise & the deep transformation you facilitate?
    • Is your client experience smooth & efficient? Think about the onboarding process, scheduling, communications – all those crucial touchpoints. Are there any friction points that might be causing hesitation?

    Like when I realised my early entrepreneurial venture, Nisbett & George (sparked by that “now or never” E-Factor competition during my final year at UEL!), wasn’t working because our commitment levels & life stages were misaligned. There I was, a new mum, juggling lectures and nappy changes, convinced I could build a fashion empire while also navigating motherhood. My co-founder, without those same family commitments, had different priorities. That “no” to the partnership as it was structured was a painful but invaluable lesson that shaped my future ventures. That mismatch, while heartbreaking at the time, taught me a powerful lesson about the importance of shared vision & aligned commitment in any business partnership. And honestly, it also reinforced the need for flexibility & understanding in a world that often expects mothers to be superhuman.

  3. Pivot & Refine: Based on your analysis, what adjustments can you make? Remember, every “no” is an opportunity to refine your offer, your marketing, or even your own internal game.
    • Can you tweak your marketing copy to speak directly to your ideal client’s pain points & desires? Highlight the transformation, not just the features! Use language that resonates with her emotional landscape, her specific challenges, and her dreams.
    • Consider A/B testing your pricing. Are you undercharging, perhaps due to a “beginner mindset” or a fear of not being “good enough”? Remember, your pricing should reflect the value you deliver & the deep transformation you facilitate. As I discovered during my own coaching qualification, undertaken while pregnant with my third daughter, sometimes investing in ourselves is the most powerful move we can make, even if it feels “stretchy” at the time.
    • Streamline your client experience with some smart tech & automation. A simple scheduling tool can save you 5 hours a week, an AI assistant can handle your social media posts, and automating your email sequences can free up your mental bandwidth for the things that truly matter – like connecting with your clients & enjoying precious moments with your family. Taking Responsibility: The Power is Within YOU

Now, I know what you might be thinking: “But Carlene, what about systemic challenges? What about the fact that women, especially mothers, often face extra hurdles in business?” I hear you. Those hurdles are real. My own journey, juggling four kids, a demanding PhD, & recovering from my fourth C-section while building this business, has shown me that firsthand. As millennials, we often feel like we’ve got the bad end of the stick – trying to build businesses, raise families, and manage the ever-increasing cost of everything while also dealing with societal expectations that don’t always reflect our reality. But here’s the thing I’ve learned: while external factors might make the climb steeper, our response to those challenges is what ultimately determines our success.

Blaming the system might feel momentarily validating, but it doesn’t move you forward. What if the real power lies not in blaming the system, but in figuring out how you can navigate it? How can you work smarter, not just harder, to overcome those hurdles? It’s about owning your progress, even if your path is different or slower than someone else’s. Remember my analogy about planting a garden? You can’t just put the seeds in the ground and expect a flourishing garden without consistent nurturing. You have to water it, weed it, protect it from the elements. The same is true for your business.

Like that time I was struggling to manage everything without support & felt like my two Miniature Pinschers, Cappuccino & Espresso, were spending their whole lives in a crate – a heart-wrenching compromise that kept me up at night. I knew it wasn’t fair to them, but I genuinely felt I had no other choice at the time. It was one of those “sliding doors” moments where I look back and think, “What if…?” What if I’d had more support, a different set of circumstances? That “no” to continuing that unsustainable situation forced me to prioritize, find solutions, and ultimately create a better life for both my family and my furry companions. Honestly, that experience was a turning point. It forced me to look at my support systems (or lack thereof), my time management, & my priorities. It was tough, but it led me to create more robust systems in my business & my life – systems that allowed me to truly nurture my family, my business, and my furry babies.

Rejection as Redirection: Finding Your Fuel

Sometimes, rejection isn’t about you or your business at all. It might simply be a matter of timing, fit, or the other party’s own circumstances. Remember, a “no” to one opportunity might be clearing the path for something even better aligned with your vision. Trust your intuition – it’s a powerful guide, just as powerful as any marketing strategy or fancy business plan. Just like how I knew, deep down, that transferring from Birmingham to UEL (despite the initial upheaval and the added challenge of navigating that move as a young mum) was the right move for me. Finding my tribe, a course that resonated with my passion for fashion and marketing, & an environment that supported me as a young mother was a game-changer. That initial “no” to staying in a place that wasn’t working opened up a whole new world of possibilities.

I remember feeling so lost & discouraged at my first university. It felt like everyone else had it figured out, while I was struggling with homesickness, a course that didn’t quite click, and the added pressure of being a new mum in a new city. It was a classic case of not fitting in, not feeling heard, and questioning if I’d even made the right choice in the first place. But that “no” to staying in an environment that was draining my soul led me to UEL, where I truly blossomed, both academically & personally. That experience taught me the profound importance of finding the right environment, trusting my gut, and recognizing that sometimes, a “no” is the most liberating answer we can give ourselves.

When you reframe rejection as redirection, you start to see the fuel for your entrepreneurial journey more clearly. Each “no” becomes a stepping stone, guiding you towards your ultimate “yes.” Reflecting on my own journey, particularly that gut-wrenching decision to leave my beloved dogs with a friend while I navigated an incredibly challenging period after having my third daughter, highlights the unexpected power of “no.” It felt like a defeat at the time, admitting I couldn’t do it all. But that “no” was a catalyst for positive change. It forced me to confront the unsustainable reality I’d created, prioritize my well-being, & ultimately build a more robust, supportive structure for my life & business. It wasn’t easy admitting I needed help, making that difficult choice, but it was the most empowering “no” I’ve ever uttered.
