Money in your business probably feels like one of two things: fine until it suddenly isn’t, or a spreadsheet you avoid on Sunday nights.
You don’t need to love finance. You need a rhythm you’ll actually keep.
The monthly hour
Once a month, sit down for one hour with:
- what came in
- what went out
- what you paid yourself
- what’s set aside for tax
That’s it. Four numbers. Do it on the same day each month so it becomes a habit, not a crisis.
Pay yourself on purpose
Decide a monthly amount you pay yourself, even if it’s small at first. A business that never pays its founder isn’t funding your life yet.
Plan for tax before it’s due
- Set aside a fixed percentage of every payment into a separate account. Your accountant can tell you the right figure for you.
- Know your key dates for 2026/27. Payments on account, if you make them, are due by 31 January and 31 July 2027, and your online return and any balancing payment by 31 January 2028.
- Making Tax Digital for Income Tax started in April 2026 for some sole traders and landlords, depending on income. It applies from April 2026 if your qualifying income is over £50,000, from April 2027 if it’s over £30,000, and from April 2028 if it’s over £20,000. Check whether it applies to you, and choose software that’s compatible.
- For 2026/27, the personal allowance is £12,570 and the VAT registration threshold is £90,000.
Three buckets
A simple split many owners use:
- Operating: bills and tools.
- Tax: untouchable.
- Owner’s pay and buffer: you, plus a cushion for a quiet month.
When to get help
If your income has changed a lot, you’re thinking about going limited, or you’re behind on tax, speak to a qualified accountant. Coaching helps you decide what you want the money to do. An accountant makes sure it’s done correctly.
If you’d like steady support while you build this rhythm, Pocket Partnership (from £247/mo) gives you monthly coaching with Carlene.
