Another list of five-minute breathing tips will not fix a diary that sells every quiet hour to someone else.
If rest only happens when you collapse, Fuel is not a spa problem. It is a design problem.
This piece puts recovery and deep work on the calendar with the same seriousness as a client call — Freedom, Designed By Intention, starting with your own energy.
Step 1: Audit a typical week
Take last week’s diary. For each block, add a simple label:
- Draining: left you flat or irritable
- Neutral: fine, nothing more
- Restoring: gave you energy back
Then look at the pattern. Most founders find draining blocks clustered on certain days and almost no restoring blocks at all. That is the starting point.
Step 2: Set non-negotiable Fuel blocks
A Fuel block is time in the diary for recovery or for the kind of work that energises you. Treat it like a paid client appointment. Examples:
- A walk after the school run, before opening email
- A protected lunch away from the screen
- One afternoon a fortnight with no calls
- An evening cut-off time, with your laptop closed
Start with two blocks a week. Put them in the diary before anything else lands there.
Step 3: Label deep work and reactive work
Not all work costs the same energy. Label your tasks:
- Deep work: writing, strategy, creating offers, complex client delivery
- Reactive work: email, messages, quick admin, scheduling
Put deep work in your best-energy window and protect it. Batch reactive work into shorter blocks. When deep work keeps getting interrupted by reactive work, you end the day tired and unfinished.
Step 4: Decide what to decline
Fuel blocks only survive if you say no to things that would otherwise fill them. Make a short list:
- Meetings without a clear agenda
- Calls during your deep-work window
- “Quick favours” that are not quick
- Last-minute requests that are not genuinely urgent
A polite, consistent no protects your energy far better than any number of self-care tips.
Step 5: Let Flow systems carry the load
The more your business relies on you remembering everything, the more energy it takes. Simple Flow systems — templates, a single client record, a clear onboarding path — reduce the need for heroic self-care. When the work runs smoothly, you need less recovery from it.
Fuel in the Business Flourish Framework
Fuel is one of five pillars in the Business Flourish Framework, alongside Focus, Flair, Flow, and Fusion. It is often the one that cracks first, because it is easy to borrow from. Scheduling your energy like revenue makes it harder to borrow and easier to repay.
