Sunday evening. You look at the week and it’s already full: client calls, a school play, a deadline, a dentist. The business was meant to give you freedom. Right now it’s taking the evenings.
Work-life harmony isn’t something you feel your way into. It’s something you design, one week at a time.
Start with fixed points
Before any client work goes in, put down the things that don’t move:
- school runs and pick-ups
- family meals you want to keep
- one evening that’s yours
- sleep
Then fit the business around them, not the other way round.
Give work its own shape
- Client days: cluster calls into two or three days if you can.
- Making time: one protected block for the work that grows the business.
- Admin hour: one slot a week, not scattered through every day.
Expect the off weeks
School holidays, illness and inset days will happen. Plan a lighter version of your week now, so the business keeps ticking when life gets louder.
If you’re using UK flexible childcare or funded hours, check what you’re entitled to. In England, eligible working parents can get up to 30 hours of funded childcare a week, 38 weeks a year, for children from 9 months old. Tax-Free Childcare adds £2 for every £8 you pay, up to £2,000 per child a year.
Check your energy, not just your hours
Notice which work leaves you flat and which leaves you lifted. Over time, move more of the first kind to systems, help or a “no”.
A business that fits
If you’d like help keeping that design week by week, Pocket Partnership (from £247/mo) gives you monthly coaching with Carlene.
